In 1996 the reef was designated a protected Marine Reserve. Thirty percent is zoned a No-Take Zone patrolled by Park Rangers from the Belize Fisheries Department, they are located on Middle Caye.

Glover’s Atoll Resort Island Lodge on Northeast caye is excellent for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and diving right off the island. Wall dives are very close to the island, five minutes by boat. The Caribbean Sea offers great visibility and turquoise blue sea, visibility is often 75m/200 ft.+
Glover’s Reef is 90 square miles (145 km), 700 patch reefs in the lagoon and is surrounded by 50 miles (80,5 km) of sheer drop-offs, which start from 25 feet and drop straight down to 2,700 feet (900meters) , 45 miles (72,45 km) form the mainland. Glovers is where the North American plate meets the Caribbean plate make a trench that runs all the way to the Cayman islands where it is 14,000 feet deep (4,242 meters), known as the Bartlett Trough.
